crackling air

4/20/09

A dry, barren state where people live close to the mountains and the prisoners live in the middle of the sprawling sagebrush covered land. Huge, empty valleys, and suddenly towering white peaks. Straight roads mostly with people zipping past hardly noticing 'The Oasis'- a pink, abandoned shack from a time when it was the only stop on the road for 135 miles. endless road, endless terrain, a perfect place for the birth of dreams. endless dreams. She wonders if her own will forever be lost to the Wild Nevada West. when she opens her window to allow the dry, sharp air to flow into her car, will it suck the dreams that have been brewing in there? will her ideas, captured in this metal bubble be freshened out and stolen forever by the infinite desert? Past white, crystalized salt lakes with the sandy, wrinkled mountains, jumping upside down in the water, squeezed between freight trucks-brave men hauling 3 semis in a row across the windy plateus. her dreams bouncing off their metal bodies, rolling under the rumbling tires, flying out into the prickly embrace of the cactus. blooming brilliant colors amongst their needles. She crosses the border between Utah and Nevada. Suddenly, the stifling, strange conserved scenery gives way to indulgence and sin, as casinos flash their lights, liquor stores rattle their bottles, and fireworks crackle into the air.
